What Are The Top Bird-Watching Destinations in Honduras?
No matter where you are in Honduras, you will see some unique species of flora and fauna. However, there are a few essential destinations if you are an avid bird-watcher, such as:
Pico Bonito National Park
Pico Bonito is one of the most beautiful destinations in Central America. It is located in the Northern region of the country, in the Cordillera Nombre de Dios mountains. There are many bird species you will see here such as eagles, kites, doves, parrots, motmots, hummingbirds, wood-creepers, Tuscans, and more.
If you are looking for accommodation while you visit Pico Bonito National Park, visit our Corinto Pearl eco-development. One of the most breathtaking tropical locations, Corinto Pearl is situated on the base of Pico Bonito, and a short drive to La Ceiba, the “entertainment center” of Honduras.
La Tigra National Park
La Tigra National Park was the first national park established in Honduras. It is home to one of Honduras’ many cloud forests and stretches across 238 square kilometers, near the city of Tegucigalpa. There are over 200 bird species, 13 species of reptiles, 31 species of mammals, and more. For bird watchers, this is a must-see destination.
Rio Platano Biosphere
Located in the La Mosquitia region of Honduras, the Biosphere reserve has numerous endangered species and diverse plant and wildlife. There are over 370 species of birds within the reserve though many are still undocumented. The region is best known as home to the king vulture, harpy eagle, great curassow, crested guan, scarlet macaw, green macaw, and military macaw.
You can arrange tours for all of the above bird-watching destinations, or visit them on your own. The best time for bird-watching in Honduras is November to April as there are more migrant species this time of year.
