Honduras: Cost of Living

Honduras is a popular tourist and retirement destination due to its low cost of living. Its natural resources make it a hot spot for travelers and retirees from North America and Europe in search of a better way of life. Located between El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, Honduras is still a relatively undiscovered tropical paradise.

Honduras is the “hidden gem” of the Caribbean. There are stretches of beautiful white-sand beaches, mountains, hiking trails, fishing villages, and bustling towns for exploring. If you’re looking for somewhere to live or retire, Honduras is a highly affordable choice.

On average, a single person can live comfortably in Honduras with $800 USD monthly expenses, including rent. A family of four can live comfortably with $1,800-$2,000 USD monthly expenses. Here is a breakdown of what to expect for the cost of living in Honduras:

Food & Drink

There are many options for food and drink in Honduras. Honduran food is a fusion of Caribbean, Spanish, and Garifuna cuisine. Typical dishes are baleadas, fish, beans, tamales, and delicious tropical fruits such as papaya, pineapple, and passion fruit.

You can purchase a whole meal for one for as little as $5, and eat out at a more expensive restaurant with a family for $25-$30. A cappuccino in Honduras typically costs $1.90; domestic beer $1.65; and a bottle of wine $8.

Nightlife

Roatan is one of Honduras’ most popular destinations with great nightlife. There are live bands, pool bars, and clubs for dancing. Trujillo is another popular city in Honduras overlooking Trujillo Bay. As a beachside town with a rich history, Trujillo offers a unique experience for those looking to escape the city.

While Honduras has become a safer place to live, it is always a good idea to avoid flaunting cash or expensive jewelry while enjoying the bustle of the country’s nightlife.
